Evaluation Process

History

Sample history form - click to view full sizeAs part of the evaluation process for equine Electro-Acuscope / Myoscope therapy, you will be asked to complete a history form (25KB PDF) that provides information about your horse's current health status, lifestyle, and habits, as well as information about prior:

  • Injuries
  • Surgeries
  • Major illnesses

This information will help your Certified Equine Therapist interpret findings from the physical examination and diagnostic readings.

Physical Examination

physical examinationDuring the physical examination phase of the evaluation process, your Certified Equine Therapist will examine your horse visually and through palpation for abnormalities such as swelling, tenderness, lumps, and/or scars. These findings will be recorded on your horse's evaluation form (77KB PDF). The therapist may ask you additional questions during the physical examination, and your history form may need to be updated.

Diagnostic Readings

Following the physical examination, your Certified Equine Therapist will use the Electro-Acuscope to take diagnostic readings on various areas of your horse. Readings are generally taken from certain predetermined areas ("acupoints" - areas of high conductivity) as well as any areas exhibiting abnormalities during the physical examination and areas revealed as potential problems on your horse's history form. It is important to remember that the therapist does not use these readings to diagnose illnesses or injuries or prescribe treatment for your horse; that is the responsibility of your veterinarian. The diagnostic readings are simply used to supplement data obtained by your veterinarian, or to pinpoint areas that may benefit from Electro-Acuscope / Myoscope treatment.

Treatment

treatmentYour Certified Equine Therapist may recommend a short treatment immediately following the evaluation. Because the Electro-Acuscope / Myoscope treatments frequently release endorphins into the horse's system, most horses enjoy the treatments. In fact, for some difficult-to-handle horses with clear-cut physical issues such as a sore back, the therapist may recommend beginning the therapy regimen with a treatment, so that the horse comes to associate the therapist and Electro-Acuscope / Myoscope equipment with a pleasant experience.
